How To Crochet For Beginners
When I first started this blog a few months ago, I had two main purposes, to provide amazing free crochet patterns and to teach people how to crochet! My very first blog post was a Chart of Basic Crochet Stitches and I always planned on following that up with photo/video tutorials of those stitches. Well, life gets busy, and being a mom of two very active little boys, means that my time is not always my own. When I do have free time, I normally spend it crocheting and designing patterns.
My house is normally not quiet enough to film un-interrupted, or when both boys are asleep at night it’s too dark to get good enough lighting! Last weekend, though, I finally had a chance to record 9 tutorials!! My eldest son, Edward, went to my sister-in-law’s farm with my mother-in-law for Easter weekend, which meant while my youngest, Samuel, napped I had time to film these long promised videos!
The step by step tutorial below is in two formats: photo and video! I will teach you how to make a slip knot, how to hold your yarn and hook, chain, single crochet and fasten off your work!
How to Make a Slip Knot
Steps 1 & 2- Wrap the yarn around your fingers.
Step 3- Cross the tail of the yarn over the circle you made and insert into the circle.
Step 4- Pull the tail through the circle, but not all the way, just enough to create the knot.
Step 5- Insert your hook into the slip knot loop, pull the tail tight.
How to Hold Yarn & Hook and Crochet Chains
Step 1- Hold the hook in your dominant hand and wrap the yarn around your other hand’s index finger
Step 2- Use your ring and pinky fingers to loosely hold the yarn.
Step 3- Hold the slip knot with your thumb and middle finger. Turn the hook away from yourself and facing the yarn.
Step 4- Grab the yarn with your hook and turn clockwise for right-handed crocheting, and counter-clockwise for left-handed crocheting,
Step 5- Pull the yarn towards the slip knot hole that’s on your hook
Step 6- Pull the yarn through the slip knot! You’ve made your first chain!
How to Single Crochet
Step 1- Insert your hook in to the second chain from the hook.
Step 2- Pull the yarn through the chain.
Step 3- Two loops are now on your hook.
Step 4- Grab the yarn and pull through both loops.
Step 5- You’ve now made your first single crochet!
How to Fasten Off
Step 1- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail a couple of inches long.
Step 2- Make a chain, and pull the tail through the chain you’ve just made.
Step 3- Pull the tail tightly. You’ve now fastened off your work!
