Half Double Crochet Stitch Tutorial

Grey half double crochet swatch.

This is the second tutorial on How to Crochet For Beginners, in the first tutorial, I teach the very basics and the Single Crochet Stitch. Today, I’ll show you how to make a Half Double Crochet Stitch.

I love the half double crochet stitch, it’s probably my favorite stitch. I enjoy making half double crochets and I love the look they make!

I know, it’s sounds so funny if you’ve never heard the term before, but it makes sense the more you learn about crochet stitches. In my next tutorial, I will be showing you how to make a double crochet stitch. Now these stitches are named after their length and their composition.

Length

A double crochet stitch is double in length of a single crochet stitch. That means a half double isn’t quite as long as a double crochet, it’s half-way in between the lengths of the single and double!

Composition

Single crochet stitch: Insert hook (in chain or stitch), grab yarn, pull through both loops.

Double crochet stitch: Yarn over (creating two loops on the hook), insert hook, grab yarn. There’s now three loops on the hook. Pull though the first two. Grab yarn, now two loops, pull through.

Half double crochet stitch: Yarn over, insert hook, grab yarn. Now pull through all three loops.

If you’re a brand new beginner a lot of these words will sound very confusing. It’s just me trying to explain that the Half Double crochet stitch skips a step that the Double crochet stitch does and is therefore only half of a double! Now away from the technical aspects of the stitch and onto the actual making!
