How to Crochet Cables

Grey crochet cable pattern

Today I’m going to teach you how to Crochet Cables! I love how cables look, they make the most simple pieces have so much more depth and personality. If you’ve never crocheted cables before, or worked in posts, it can be a bit tricky at first, but please stick with me and it will get easier! I personally found it difficult at first, but I’m very glad I kept at it, because I love crocheting cables! Once you get the hang of it, make sure to check out the Cabled Beanie Pattern for men!

Big Plans

I had big plans for my crochet tutorials. If you saw the last two tutorials that I posted, you might have read that I said I had filmed 8 or 9 videos. Well that was true, I did. Life got in the way and instead of posting all of the videos as planned, and it order, my husband and I decided we would sell our house, move in with my mother-in-law, and buy an acreage in Ontario (we currently live in Edmonton, Alberta). I planned on releasing a few more tutorials before I released this Crochet Cable Tutorial! But I have a few patterns up my sleeve that use this cable pattern and I wanted to give you all some time to practice this pattern before they come out! How to Crochet Cables

There are many different patterns for crochet cables, this pattern uses rows of single crochet instead of double crochets. I think it makes it great for garments and hats where you don’t want as many large holes but still want cables!

Abbreviations (US Terms)

Sc- Single Crochet
Ch- Chain
FPdc- Front Post Double Crochet
*LFPdc- Long Front Post Double Crochet
Sk st/post- Skip stitch/post

*I’ve been told there is more than one definition for a LFPdc. The way I’ve been taught, and show in this tutorial, is to yarn over, insert hook into front post, pull through. There should be 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through 1 loop. Yarn over, pull through two loops. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops.

Pattern

For this example, I started by crocheting two rows of 22 single crochets with a 5.0mm crochet hook, I recommend a Susan Bates hook, it’s what I use and love! And my favourite yarn, Lion Bran Jeans (seriously love this yarn!!) I’ve used it in two of my patterns already, a Men’s Tie and The Jean Skirt.

Row 3- Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, FPdc in next 2 sts two rows below, sc 4, sk2, LFPdc in next 2 sts two rows below, LFPdc back in 2 sts, two rows below, that were skipped. Sc in next 4 sts, FPdc in next 2 sts two rows below, sc in last 3 sts.

Row 4- Ch 1, sc across.

Row 5- Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, FPdc in next 2 post sts, sc 4, FPdc in next 4 post sts. Sc in next 4 sts, FPdc in next 2 posts, sc in last 3 sts.

Row 6- Ch 1, sc across.

Row 7- Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, FPdc in next 2 posts, sc 4, sk2 posts, LFPdc in next 2 posts, LFPdc back into the 2 skipped posts. Sc in next 4 sts, FPdc in next 2 posts, sc in last 3 sts.

Repeat rows 4 to 7 until you have the length desired!
